Here’s the deal-a-rooskie on this band. My buddy Bruce Robison threw a music festival in our home town of Bandera, TX. This band with a cool name was on the bill in the afternoon. So I was hanging out with my peeps blazing some skeeters and these guys hit the stage.
Now, understand, for the past three years I’ve been looking for a rock band in Texas to take around to the major labels and make them fame-a-rooskie. I went to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Odessa, Lubbock, El Paso, and any where else in the Lone Star state where I heard a good rock band was playing. And I kept coming up empty. I saw lots of really good bands but nothing I thought was ready to blow up and make me lots of do-re-me, while I hang out on Isla Mujeres Mexico at the Soggy Peso with Dal and the boys and take the occasional deep sea fishing trip on the Gunslinger with Captain Don and my buddy Ott.
So here’s this band and they start to rock it out. Bam. They blaze me from the first song. Energy, songs, musicianship, melodies, guitar hooks, stage presence, fearlessness. ZBoss on guitar and lead vocals, GMA on the bass, Byman on drums, and Tye on lead. They had it all. And they were all from Bandera. This was surprising because you see Bandera is the Cowboy Capital of the World and I never expected such great rock ‘n’ roll to come out of my hometown. But here they were. Real rockers and ready to explode on the scene. Just what I had been searching for.
After they rocked it out I went back stage and made up some shit about what a big deal-ee-o I was and that I was the gateway to stardom. They bought it like a drunken electrical engineer in a Bangkok whorehouse.
So they gave me a CD and press kit and we exchanged numbers. And then I went back to work and set it aside. I had every intention of following up but before I could, this pit bull named La La calls me. She’s married to the singer of the band. Never quits that La La. She’s awesome.
Next thing I know I’m wining and dining the boys and La La at the OST in Bandera. I spew some garbage about how great they are and that I want to work with them. You know go into the studio and produce some of the new song-a-rooskies, then go get a major label record deal, make stacks of cash, get the all the girls, blaze the planet and pretty much just keep rockin’ in the free world like Neil Young told us all to do.
So we get after it and head on over to Salmon Peak Studios in San Antonio. There the Highlander and Real Badass engineered a great set of 9 songs while I guided my young stallions from the producer’s chair. All originals and all awesome. The boys were incredible in the studio.
Next we traveled up to Austin and mixed the record with K-Sizzle at Premium Recording Studios. K-Siz kicked ass. The mixing went great because the bass player GMA was in Thailand. See he’s apparently the smart one. Some bullshit career as an electrical engineer. Clearly a road to nowhere so his fall back plan is playing bass.
Next stop for us was South Padre Island to go see the legendary Billy Stull at Masterpiece Mastering. There we joined El Maestro in the mastering studio and he laid on the sweets to finish out the songs.
Ty poured water on my shorts to make it look like I wet my pants. He’s a jackass. But the good part is we got to hang together on SPI and have some fun like sleeping in, hanging out at the beach house and hitting the local scene and sleeping in and stuff. Byman, Kyle, and Archer did some fishing and knocked back some brewskies. Ty and me. Well we knocked back some brewskies. And then we did it again.
Found a really cool bar called Tequila Sunset on the bay.
